Today’s featured image is quite cool.
It is a mural of Vasco da Gama leaving Portugal.
In the painting, Abraham ben Samuel Zacuto is shown presenting his astronomical tables to da Gama before his departure from Lisbon in 1497.
What I really like about this mural is all detail in the painting, including the Portuguese Coat of Arms, the large carrack in the background, the royal attire of the people, the regal aura, the reverence for the voyage, and last but not least, all the prayers… There is truly a lot to be taken in if you look at the painting in detail. It kind of makes you feel like you are there.
The mural (by John Henry Amshewitz) resides in the William Cullen Library at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
